First Time Wine Tasting?  Here's 10 Tips & Tricks

If you are new to drinking wine or you would just like to learn more about it, wine tasting is great place to start!  Here are a few simple tips and tricks for your first wine tasting experience.

1.     Don't be intimidated

Wine tasting is the perfect way to learn more about how it is made, how to identify flavors, and how to pair it with food.  Whether you have been drinking wine for a long time or have never tried it, a tasting provides the opportunity to learn more about why regions and processes make a difference, how to determine what you like, and so much more.

2.     Ask questions

Wine tastings are great opportunities to speak with knowledgeable winemakers and sommeliers to better your own understanding and preferences when it comes to wine.  Ask questions about how to properly taste the wine, how to pair the wine with food, or even how it's made. No question is off the table!  Take advantage of the opportunity and time to learn more about wine.

3.     Be open to trying new wines

You may already have a preference of the wines you like, such as white wine versus red wine, or if you prefer a light wine to a richer version.  This is a great time to be open to exploring new varietals.  Each winery varies in its specialty due to their grapes, region, and fermentation processes.  If you step out of your comfort zone, you just might discover a new favorite wine.

4.     Take your time

Relax and soak in the atmosphere.  Wineries offer a unique and beautiful setting to spend time with friends and family.  Enjoy sipping on each wine, take in the views, and celebrate a beautiful day together.

5.     Check out the wineries online

Check out the wineries you are interested in online prior to visiting.  This will allow you to know the tasting cost, appropriate attire, and if appointments are necessary.  It will also inform you if there is food available or if you can bring your own for a picnic.

6.     Be sure to eat and drink water

The Temecula Valley sunshine and heat means water is essential to a great day of wine tasting.  Drink lots of water prior to the tasting and throughout the day if you plan on visiting a few wineries.  This will not only help you stay hydrated but it will also help you taste the wines better, keeping your palette cleansed and ready for a new tasting.   Food also helps cleanse your palette, as you will notice most wineries provide small snacks to assist with this.   Enjoy a delicious lunch during your wine tasting or use the time to stop in town for a bite to eat and change of scenery.

7.     Dress appropriately

Temecula Valley wine country is beautiful, sunny, and warm during the day but cooler in the evenings.  Therefore, light layers and breathable fabrics are key staples to your wine tasting attire.  Be extra careful of what pieces you choose, perhaps no white and not your nicest outfit as wine spills can accidentally occur.  For ladies, throw on a dress, flat sandals, and bring a jean jacket for later in the day and you will be picture perfect.  As for the gentlemen, a nice t-shirt or button down paired with shorts or pants is the perfect outfit for exploring Temecula Valley wine country.  However you choose to dress, be sure to check the weather before you visit.

8.     Wear sunscreen

Sunny Temecula Valley wine country welcomes you for a day full of wine tasting.  You will often be outside exploring the vineyards, enjoying the scenery, and getting lots of sunshine so sunscreen is key!  Do not forget to reapply as the day goes on so you can protect your skin and enjoy all that Temecula has to offer!

9.     Take notes

During your wine tasting, take down notes about flavors or wines you are enjoying.  This will not only help you to learn more about wine but will also help you remember which were your favorites and why.  Be sure to stop by the wine shop or ask the sommelier if you can purchase a bottle of your favorite to take home.

10.  Swirl, Smell, & See

As each wine is poured, take the time to gently swirl your wine around in your glass.  This allows oxygen into the wine releasing its fragrance.  Your wine sommelier will be helpful in describing the particular taste and smell elements to each wine they pour.
