Canyon Lake,CA
Welcome to Canyon Lake: City Overview
Before there was Canyon Lake, there was the California Southern Railroad that included a line running from Perris to Elsinore. When the Santa Fe Railroad purchased the line, they joined it with theirs in San Bernardino. However, it suffered damage from numerous floods and was purchased along with 1,000 other acres by the Temescal Water Company. Those parcels of land make up majority of Canyon Lake today.
In 1927, construction began to build a dam across the river known as the Railroad Canyon Reservoir. The Reservoir, now known as Canyon Lake, was once one of the largest fresh water lakes available for hunting, camping, and fishing in Southern California. Established in 1990, the city of Canyon Lake became a gated community where residents can enjoy the lake for boating and recreational activities.
While the Canyon Lake residents enjoy a resort-style life, the surrounding areas are rapidly growing and becoming more metropolitan. Looking to experience the lake? You'll have to become a resident or be accompanied by one, as the property is private and exclusive to Canyon Lake residents.
