Welcome to Lake Elsinore: City Overview

 

            Like many of the cities in Southern California, Lake Elsinore was originally inhabited by the Lusieño Indians. It later became home to Don Agustin Machado in 1858, whose house was part of the historic Butterfield stage route and can be found still standing today.  For only $24,000, the land was sold to city founder Franklin Heald and was named Elsinore after Shakespeare's Hamlet.  The city grew to become a popular town for merchants, travelers, and agriculture.  In the late 1800s, industries such as mining, ranching, and agriculture for fruits and nuts built the backbone of community's economy.  Then in the 1920s, it became a playground for the wealthy and an Olympic training site for high-speed boat racing.

 

            Nowadays, Lake Elsinore is known as a favorite lake destination of Southern California.  The "Lake" part of the name was voted and approved by citizens in 1972 to encourage tourism to this lake-oriented area.  While Lake Elsinore has faced its challenges, it is now one of the top destinations for boating, skydiving, and other recreational activities. 

 

            Visitors can enjoy the Lake Elsinore Diamond or more commonly referred to as "Storm Stadium" for some Minor League Baseball.  Or perhaps you'll want to take a dip in the Ortega Falls, a local swimming hole and seasonal waterfall.  Lake Elsinore is a city rich in history, activities, and experiences.  Be sure to visit for a fun-filled day and great night out at some of the delicious bars and restaurants.
